  • Oh No! Vertigo!

During my lunch break on Monday, the world slipped away from me and I fell down on the sidewalk.

I have 2 theories as to why this happened:

1.) Our world is actually a decoration–a snowglobe of sorts–resting on a giant coffee table belonging to a giant god. On Monday, around noon, the god decided to plop down on the couch and read the newspaper. He flopped off his clogs (gods love clogs) and propped his hairy feet on the edge of the table’s glass top; for a few uneasy moments, the table’s top perched haphazardly on the table’s base. Luckily, the giant god’s mother bristled into the living room and said, “get your filthy feet off of there.” He did and our world was put back to where it usually is.

    2.) I have vertigo.

I remember reading an article once upon a time about how deep sea divers can get lost in the water; they swim around so much that they forget which way is up. On Monday–and thrice since–I’ve struggled to find which way is straight. I may have an inner-ear infection. My ears are warm in a yucky way. I can feel my brain folds in a buzzy, gross headachey way. If I were a baby, I’d wail a bit.

I’ve been to work all week, ploughing through.Yesterday morning, I tried to convince myself I was fine by going on a 6-mile run. I ended up walking most of it after nearly falling over into Lake Michigan. Luckily, I’ve had enough sense to retire my bike until I’m sure that I won’t fall over onto a car. But man, I need to get better; I’m seeing the doctor asap. I’m not usually prone to jealousy, but I’m green with it riding the crowded bus to work, looking out the window at all the happy bikers smiling at the sun.

    Ever had vertigo?

  • Oh no! Girrl you better get to the doctor quick!

I’ve never actually had vertigo.  dizzyness, yes. a disoriented feeling, yes. vertigo, never.

  • Oh good god. I had vertigo one time and it was the worst experience of my life. It wasn’t really like what you describe though. Not saying you don’t have vertigo, of course. You probably do have some kind of inner ear infection. The time I had it, it started with a ringing in my ears one evening, and then in the middle of the night I woke up with bed spins. In the morning, I still had bed spins and I knew if I got out of bed I would probably fall over. When I did get out of bed, I immediately started puking. It was uncontrollable and non-stop and by far the most terrible thing i’ve ever experienced. I had to go to the hospital and get a shot in my but and some anti-vert medication. They also gave me valium. heh. So yah, definitely go to the doctor! They might give you antibiotics, but most likely they will just give you an anti-vert med to control the symptoms and tell you to wait it out. Hope the worst is past for you, though.

  • Hey, I love the new look here!

I had vertigo and double vision for 6 weeks once. It turns out it was my first official attack of MS. So, hie ye to a doctor, prontisimo!

  • The snow globe idea was fun to read about but dang! Do you think it may be akin to the fainting? I am glad you are taking the bus for a bit. And hope you get to see a doc soon!

I know that jealousy!  Here’s to not feeling it too much longer!

Btw, I wanted to compliment you on your story telling post. It was interesting and had me thinking about it for a couple of days. I am curious about the storyteller you know at work too. Like what story is being told and why you think it might be. That was some good thinkin stuff right there!

  • Vertigo, no. Panic attacks, yes.

Hope your world is back to right-side-up soon.

  • Wow. Good folks here.

Yeah, Vertigo could be a symptom of something underlying.
Or you’ve been listening to too much U2.
