Love at First Bite
Yesterday I was seduced by a cheeky little tart that winked at me from the icy chambers of my grocer’s freezer section. Opening the freezer door, a mysterious cloud of cold swirled around me as my greedy hand wrapped around the sassy little container. The picture on her face depicted a glorious landscape of delicate pink softy whipped with white cream and dotted flirtatiously with dark chocolate chips. Just when I thought that the Edy’s ice cream company had reached the sugary climax of their luscious recipe capabilities with their Black Cherry and Vanilla Swirl frozen yogurt, they whipped up something new to keep a slight curve on my hips: Edy’s Light Slow Churned Raspberry Royale.
Yes my friends, Edy’s Light Slow Churned Raspberry Royale might have half the fat and a third fewer calories than regular ice cream, but screw that. This 1.75 quarts (1.65 liters for those of you kinky metric system freaks) of creamy goodness has more flavor and rich, velvety love than any full-figured ice cream I’ve ever had the pleasure of devouring. The flavor reminds me of a raspberry French soda, that spunky little cafe drink containing soda water, raspberry favoring, a splash of half and half and whipped cream. But Edy’s Light Slow Churned Raspberry Royale has the added bonus of chocolate and plus, it’s ice cream, and there is no satisfaction like a mug of ice cream after dinner or a few spoonfuls straight from the container when no one is looking.

No peach? Hagen Daaz chocolate sorbet. All the chocolatey goodness without the increase in jeans size.
Edy’s Slow Churned is excellent, in whatever flavor. My latest trip to the grocery store involved coming home with Breyer’s Chocolate Overload Extra Creamy Ice Cream. Dark chocolate and white chocolate flavored ice cream swirls awash with yummy white and dark chocolate chips. In a word: Magnificent.
I am not familiar with this Edy’s Slow Churned phenomenon. Usually if we buy ice cream we by Ben and Jerry’s (living in Vermont you can’t not buy B&J from time to time), but going on your mouth-watering recommendation, I’m going to get some of the Edy’s brand next time it’s on sale. BF got me an ice cream maker for my birthday last year. I happened to say very offhand once, “I love sorbet … wouldn’t it be great to be able to make our own?” Thus, I got an ice cream maker very unexpectedly. I’ve learned that making my own ice cream is much tastier than buying it. The drawbacks of course being that it takes a fair amount of time to do (versus just popping open the lid and diving in), and that the ice cream maker is so noisy it sounds like it’s trying to launch itself into orbit.
:: Thank you for your comment re: wedding. We haven’t even really started this and I feel like it’s going to be out of control. The last thing I want is one of those overdone affairs with dancing waiters. I want something nice, though, and I want it to be exactly what I want. Now, if only I could figure out what that is …
Oh, Truly, you will kill me, but I actually bought a package of Twinkies the other day. TWINKIES!!! My husband was appalled. I couldn’t believe it did it. But I had that jones for a Twinkie and I had to do it. It was overly sweet and gooey and hit the spot perfectly.
RYC: I hope you took my comments about grad school as: here are the variables, do what suits you best. I also do very well in academic environments, but I don’t think an MFA really does much for your writing career. I do think individual classes can be invaluable. As they say, your mileage may vary.
Can you believe this snow?? Why? I don’t think it snowed all January and hardly at all in Feb. and now this!

Happy belated birthday! I hope it was a great one. I totally get that feeling of super stardom that happens once a year one a gal’s birthday. A natural high if there ever was one.
Lately I’ve been into fruit. Weird for the winter, I know… I don’t know what it is. We’ve been having yogurt with pineapple, strawberries, kiwi, and granola for breakfast and things like mango salad for dinner. I’ve also been making crab cakes whenever the king crab legs go on sale at the market. I find I can make an entire meal of crab cakes and mango salad with just one good-sized crab leg and it isn’t any more expensive than other meat.
Twinkies, though… now that’s a thought.
