  • I am really, really happy tonight.
I am happy like I was when I was a kid, sharing Spanish Rice and Angel Food cake at my birthday parties.
I am happy like when I was a slap-happy college freshman decorating my dorm room with collages cut from Spin and Rolling Stone magazine with my first roommate.
I am happy like I am when I’m with my oldest friend Brian when we walk into a bar and he knows everyone and we are treated like VIP’s and I smile to be lucky enough to know him better than anyone there.
I am happy like when my amazing partner proposes that we move together to a crazy new place or an entirely new country–and he is completely serious.

I am happy because I’m writing something that I like. And that makes any messy part of my life seem like only a fleeting thing.

    I’ll post it when it’s time….

  • and what made you that happy?

  • And you’re happy because you have a wonderful cat! Your description of Giles made me laugh out loud. “As slightly rancid and very strange as he is, he’s my happy, fat little fluff.” hahaha. Giles should meet my friend’s cat, Rita. Rita was attacked by my friend’s dog when she was a kitten, and the result has been that Rita is slightly slow. It’s sad, yes, but looking at Rita insights so much compassion for this silly, confused, timid little cat. Her face is flat and her eyes are so round. She looks sort of like that friendly Gremlin whose name is escaping me at the moment.

  • Also, thank you for comments about my ‘trip to the bar’ story. I hardly ever right third person stories, so I was a little nervous about posting that one. I think I write best about New York when I’m there–the details are fresher in my mind. Once I leave, it becomes a big blur. As for the nightmares: who the hell knows? Every night. They’re usually about my job.

Re: Michael Chabon. I’m not loving the Mysteries of Pittsburgh. I’ve never read anything else by him, and this one came highly recommended, and I’m about halfway into it and I still can’t get into it. It’s taking forever to read, only because I keep forgetting to go back to it. Oh well, I’ll finish it eventually.

    Awaiting your next post,

    Laura
